James Turrell
A new landmark for Hannover's sculpture garden
Hannover is getting a Turrell! By 2026 things should be ready: A "Sky Space" is planned for the sculpture garden of the Sprengel Museum in Hannover - an installation by US artist James Turrell specially developed for this outdoor space.
Turrell is known for his fascinating installations that use light as a central medium. His concept for the Sprengel Museum, "Totus intus, totus foris" (All inside, all outside), transforms the museum courtyard into a work of art: eight light columns support a filigree flat roof that seems to float, is supported by light and covers the entire courtyard. The dimensions of the canopy have been chosen so that it clearly towers above the Sprengel building and is therefore visible from afar. A large ring connects the supports and illuminates the underside of the roof with LED lights, from where the light is reflected downwards. The courtyard is thus transformed into a large body of light and colour - a new meeting place for art enthusiasts.
The Hannover Re Foundation is assuming the costs of the artistic design of the work and is thus once again supporting its hometown in being a lively and sought-after site of cultural exchange.
"Entirely in keeping with the motto "Give back to the future!", we are absolutely delighted to bring world art and a new attraction to the heart of Lower Saxony with the "Sky Space". The Sprengel Museum already has a large collection of earlier works by James Turrell, so we believe that the "Sky Space" will complement the collection very well. There is nothing comparable on this scale in Germany or Europe."
