Ecological reforestation in the Harz region
Adaptation protects forests
For over 30 years Bergwaldprojekt e. V. has been contributing to the reforestation of ecosystems. The goal is to protect, preserve and care for the forest through near-natural forest development. The association was honoured as a UN Decade Project as part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The mechanism of the projects is multi-layered: volunteers work towards ecological forest conversion, for example in Harz National Park, and at the same time gain in-depth insights into the correlations and connectedness in nature and the dependency of people on these fundamental natural resources.
The aim of the work assignments under the Bergwaldprojekt e. V. is to
- preserve or restore biodiversity and the manifold functions of ecosystems,
- make the participants aware of the importance of and threat to our natural resources and
- motivate society to use natural resources in a way that is compatible with nature.
