Science Engagement meets sustainability
In 2024, we have taken the opportunity to sponsor the Falling Walls Engage initiative – a global platform for Science Engagement. Its mission is a better understanding and public involvement with science that helps to tackle global challenges through evidence-based decision-making and contributes to the overall well-being of our society. Falling Walls Engage enables us to generate broad publicity for our focus on climate change adaptation.
At the heart of Falling Walls Engage are the pitches presented each year on 7 November as part of the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin, where projects from all over the world are presented. They compete for the title of the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year in the Science Engagement category. As the exclusive sponsor of the Falling Walls Engage Pitches, we have chosen to focus on innovative projects that promote science engagement with a connection to sustainability and climate change adaptation impacting target groups who are dealing with the effects of climate change.
In 2024, 21 amazing projects made it to the final and presented themselves to the international jury. The title of the Science Breakthrough of the Year in Science Engagement was finally secured by Dr. Apple Pui Yi Chui, Hong Kong, with her project "Breaking the Wall to Engage Schools in Coral Restoration".
The Coral Nursery Education Programme engages students in coral restoration by turning schools into nurseries. They culture corals under guidance, which are later outplanted into the sea. The programme provides solid knowledge and raises awareness about coral reefs and climate change, establishing a sense of mission to restore coral communities and protect the ocean.

“As a project partner, Falling Walls Engage offers us the opportunity to actively promote Science Engagement and link it to the topic of climate change, which is one of our core topics. By working together, we are able to promote innovative projects that inspire how society can get involved in education, scientific breakthroughs, sustainability, and how to give back to the future. We want to foster a passion for science and the confidence that big challenges can be tackled utilizing human ingenuity and curiosity.”
