Making reliable transportation accessible
Bicycles for education, health and economic development
One million bicycles for five million people – that is the milestone set for 2025. To make it a reality, we are supporting the World Bicycle Relief project with our donation. World Bicycle Relief builds so-called bicycle ecosystems in developing countries. People are trained as mechanics, given access to spare parts and equipped with bicycles. By increasing their range of mobility, individuals and communities enjoy better access to educational facilities, workplaces and the healthcare system: daily journeys to school or into town spanning several kilometres in length can be covered far more quickly using a bicycle.
Whether it comes to health, education or economic development – a single bicycle can make a world of difference for up to five people: a school kilometres away is put within reach, raising the level of education for children and subsequent generations. The knowledge gained benefits the health and education of an entire family. The effect on girls and women is even more far-reaching. Access to education empowers women and makes them less dependent on men, while at the same time reducing maternal mortality and the number of unwanted marriages.

The amount of the donation is based on the number of kilometers that Hannover Re employees cycle as part of the Germany-wide campaign "Mit dem Rad zur Arbeit" (bike to work) organized by the National Cyclists’ Association (ADFC= Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club e.V.) and the AOK health insurance provider during the campaign period. The total mileage covered is subsequently converted to CO₂ saved. For every kilogram of CO₂ saved, the Hannover Re Foundation donates one euro to World Bicycle Relief.
